Are Reciprocal Links Good or Bad for SEO?

Are Reciprocal Links Good or Bad for SEO? Many of the top search engine optimization experts tell us that we need to do a lot of link exchanges in order to rank high in search engines.

Once upon a time, this was unquestionably true, and it was sufficient to propel you to the top of the rankings. Because of the massive increase in Internet usage and website traffic, search engines have caught on and now use complex algorithms to determine your ranking. These, of course, are a closely guarded secret known only to a few geeks on the inside and guessed at by those on the outside.

Many search engine optimization (SEO) experts now advise us to be cautious of link exchanges and to consider the following key points.

Reciprocal Links Good or Bad for SEO?

  1. Link farms — If your link is in what search engines consider a link farm, it may hurt your ranking. A link farm is typically a site with a large number of links on it, or a page with a large number of links on it. It is less likely to harm your ranking if the link farm is organized into categories with only a couple of dozen relevant links per page.
  2. Irrelevant sites — If your website is geared toward children, link exchanges with pharmacies and gambling sites may harm your rankings because they are not truly relevant. Having links to other children’s sites and sites related to children is much better for your rankings and will increase the relevancy of your website.
  3. Anchor text — The words that link from another site to yours are very important for search engine ranking. If the words “hello stranger” were a hyperlink to your site, it would be useless unless your site was about strangers. If you had links from other websites and the words, “good parenting,” were the hyperlink, this will be favored by search engines. If your site was about children and your keyword was “good parenting.”

It is worth while you discern the links when you exchange links with someone. Yes, I know that you want as few links as possible, but consider the importance of your visitors’ links and also what your visitors think about your website links. How much do parents think parents would be interested in visiting your websites if you owned a site full of children’s games and educational material, and then many links to adult websites?

You can increase your standing at search engines by keeping your link exchanges relevant and provide your readers with valuable additional resources.
